History

Shady Lady Lighting has a very long history in one form or another, and the original company that was to become Shady Lady Lighting was started over 40 (possibly 50?) years ago. (Please feel free to contact us if you have any information you can add to this history, we would love to hear from you). The Shady Lady Lighting name began as a small manufacturer in 1979 supplying the local market with quality hand-made fabric shades. Up until December 2002 we were based in Woburn (a Lower Hutt suburb), in a building that was originally the Prince Edward Picture Theatre in Woburn. Today we continue supply New Zealand with the shades you see in Quality Lighting Showrooms, Shopping Centers, Hotels, Restaurants, Museums, Cafes and of course your Homes. We are also the agents for a number of major lighting brands including the historic LODE Lighting (re-production and historical lighting second to none), Lights and Lamps (Australasia's largest Table and floor Lamp supplier), and several European parts and components manufacturers.

The "Shady Lady"

The famous "Lady" logo has been around for a very long time and has seen many other logos and companies come and go in that time. There are several stories behind it, and who the Lady the logo was based on actually was (both fact and fiction...) In 2008 the "Lady" Logo was finally retired after 29 years of service, and was replaced with the newer logos including the one you see at the top of our web-pages today.

Woburn Picture Theatre (Prince Edward)

This was our home for over 20 years and it was a grand building to work in. It had a fabulous history and many stories to tell about the movies that were shown in the theatre over the years. We had our shade making area upstairs and the retail shop downstairs (you walked up the original wide theatre staircase to get between the two). The building saw us grow from a shade making company to a very well know lighting shop specializing in custom made shades, but also supplying a wide variety of other lighting.

Alicetown (Shady Lady Lighting)

This was our showroom in Alicetown Lower Hutt for eleven years from January 2003 until August 2014. We originally had our manufacturing factory behind the showroom, but with both sides of the business growing we needed more space. In 2009 we re-located our manufacturing and importing to our current factory at Unit 1, 2 Horlor street, Naenae. This allowed our retail showroom in Alicetown to take over the space vacated by the warehouse and double in size.

Alicetown (Wellington Lighthouse)

It was during our time at Alicetown that we re-branded the retail showroom first "Shady Lady Lighthouse" and then "Wellington Lighthouse" when we were temporary part of the then "lighthouse" group.

Rutherford Street, Central Lower Hutt

September 2014 saw us open our current large showroom at 3 Rutherford Street, Central Lower Hutt. At this time we re-branded the showroom back to the original name favoured by our regular customer base - Shady Lady Lighting, and saw us introduce our new (current) Logo. This showroom is open Mon-Fri 9.00 - 5.00, and Saturdays 9.30 - 4.00. The showroom has a great range of products on display, including New Zealands largest range of fabric shades and re-production lighting.
